Fake identities (and how to prevent)

Sam Fladung Jan. 6, 2009
Is there any concern moving forward with people creating profiles in celebrity/politician names and causing havoc with them?

Not sure what the best way to prevent this would be, (maybe flag certain names on sign up as suspicious).

There wasn't, but there is now.

This is why all of you alpha testers = awesome.

Maybe this is tackled by the same flagging / report abuse system we use for guides, fixes, comments, etc.

I still think you probably want to catch some of the more obvious ones on account creation (Bush, obama, cheney etc)

Also, is there any planned way to deal with the eventual name conflicts? (ie there are 10 John Smiths)

The challenge is that is becomes a slippery slope of expectations very quickly, especially globally, and that while I can catch Barack Obama, i can't catch The Barak Obama or Barak H. Obama or etc etc etc. If people are creative, they'll find a way around quickly.

As for name conflicts, for URLs, you'd get John-Smith-10 or you could use your (unique) username.
