Copyrights and news stories

Sam Fladung Jan. 5, 2009
Does anyone know the legal status of the news stories that are copied and pasted onto this site? It strikes me as a potential problem when the site is released, since I don't believe that copyright law allows a story to be reproduced in full without express permission from the author/copyright owner.

It'll depend on the source, but in general, my hope is that news stories are rewritten and/or summarized for the site.

This brings up a good issue that we'll need to address moving forward.

Ok, this should be made clear somewhere. I would also recommend planning on removing any questionable articles prior to your release (most of the news article's I looked at appear to be copied from copywritten sources). Reply to comment

Right now when submitting a news story the following is stated:

"The body of the story. Preferably, this is in your own words, but if citing another article, this can also be the body of that article."

This should probably be replaced with something along the lines of:
"The body of the story. This must be in your own words unless the story is in the public domain . If you do copy a story in the public domain be sure to site it properly"

Agree that this is an issue. For our future reference, this is a good link to copyright info: http://www.companynewsletters.com/copyright.h tm Reply to comment

opening up a bug report on this to make sure it gets fixed. Reply to comment

After our call today, our decision is to pull the body field entirely, since we don't really have anything new to add to the story besides a nice, in-big-picture summary. The rest of the news will stay intact. Reply to comment

And by "the rest of the news", I mean things like submitter, tags, etc.

I don't mean that the stories currently up will stay as-is. Their bodies will go away.
